Tour Overview

Tohoku University Archives

This is more than a simple archery lesson; it is a profound journey into the interconnected worlds of Kyudo (Japanese archery) and Zen.
You will follow the spiritual footsteps of Kenzo Awa, the legendary master revered as a "Great Master of the Bow."
Your journey begins with a moment of reflection at Shoho-ji Temple, where Kenzo Awa rests. Here, amidst the quiet dignity of this historic site, you can calm your mind and honor his legacy.
The experience continues at the traditional Ishinomaki Kyudo Dojo, built by Awa’s disciple, Keishiro Saijo. Donning traditional training wear (dogi) and learning the formal etiquette (reiho), you will find that drawing the bow is an exercise in mindfulness—a precious opportunity for self-reflection and inner peace.
Kenzo Awa’s teachings notably influenced the classic book Zen in the Art of Archery by German philosopher Eugen Herrigel. A favorite of figures like Steve Jobs, this book introduced Zen philosophy to the West. By exploring Awa’s original philosophy, you will gain a deep understanding of how technical mastery and spiritual discipline become one.

Discover Ishinomaki

As the second-largest city in Miyagi Prefecture—the heart of the Michinoku region—Ishinomaki is a culinary treasure trove. It is blessed by the fertile lands of the Kitakami River and the legendary waters off the coast of Mt. Kinkasan, recognized as one of the world's three most productive fishing grounds.
The city is home to a wealth of captivating attractions. Explore the Ishinomori Mangattan Museum, dedicated to the legacy of legendary manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori. History enthusiasts can visit the Sant Juan Bautista Museum, which displays a replica of the galleon that set sail for Rome 400 years ago. This historic voyage was led by the samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga under the orders of the feudal lord, Date Masamune.
For a spiritual experience, visit Mt. Kinkasan, revered as one of the three holiest sites in northern Japan. Local legend promises that those who visit this island shrine for three consecutive years will be blessed with financial prosperity for the rest of their lives.
Ishinomaki’s culinary scene is a journey in itself, highlighted by the premium "Kinka Brand" seafood. Indulge in local favorites such as Kinka-don—a lavish seafood bowl—or the exquisite Kinka-sushi, both showcasing the freshest seasonal catches from our world-renowned fishing grounds. You can also enjoy Ishinomaki Yakisoba, a local soul food dearly cherished by the residents, characterized by its unique "double-steamed brown noodles".
While Ishinomaki was immensely affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, we have been able to move forward step by step thanks to the overwhelming support—both tangible and intangible—received from people across the nation and the world.
We await your visit with the true spirit of "Omotenashi" (Japanese hospitality). Our greatest hope is that you will fully experience, enjoy, and fall in love with Ishinomaki, leaving with memories that make you say, "I can't wait to come back!" — Source: Ishinomaki Tourism Association
